cool climate wines
Welcome to Zig Zag Road Vineyard, Winery and boutique cellar door. We are a family-owned business and make award-winning, estate-grown wine. The main body of our vineyard was established in 1972 by Roger Aldrich, making us one of the oldest vineyards in the region.
We grow and make cool climate Riesling, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Sparking Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. We also make wild-fermented natural wines, including a Merlot pet-nat, under our second label Kind Folk.
The next generation
Henry and Harriet Churchill are the fourth stewards of the beautiful volcanic-rich country on which Zig Zag Rd Vineyard is situated.
We joined the Zig Zag family following on from the Bellchambers at the start of 2018, a few weeks before our first son was born.
Starting the Bio-dynamic journey
In mid 2019 we started our journey of making our wine naturally and growing our grapes bio-dynamically which means no harsh chemicals or pesticides. Instead we use a range of techniques and applications to improve the soil and vine health such as apply ‘teas’ we’ve brewed to the vines made from nettle and willow gathered from the property which is naturally more resilient to disease.

Kind Folk
The kindness of others inspires us everyday, and both being originally from the UK, we rely deeply on our friends and community to support us through thick and thin. Our Kind Folk label, and the labels we use for our Zig Zag wines, tell the story of all the many generous hands that have helped prune and tend to the vines or make the wine and support the business. Kind Folk for us goes beyond a nice looking label. It is a philosophy that we try to keep at the heart of our business and, as we live on the property, it’s part of our home-life as well. Kindness from others going to unbelievable lengths to help us out, kindness to the earth as we work with the soil to grow fruit each year, kindness to ourselves as learn to trust ourselves and others, and be humbled daily by the mistakes we make along the way. And kindness from our customers, who inspire us to grow grapes and make wine that doesn’t cost the earth.
